Come into my parlour said the spider to the fly... …the perks were better. The office was a glass faced high-rise growing out of a paddy field surrounded by agricultural land and a bit away from the city. (The same with all IT hubs). The coffee corner open 24x7 brought class into the job. My office promised the down payment for an apartment while the rest arranged through bank loan. This was life man – my heart kept singing! House agents came tripping at all odd hours of the day. Then he came - the Agent. The complex he showed was close by. I wondered why I had not noticed it before. It was a 2BHK on the second floor. My neighbours, Mr and Mrs Rao, were friendly. “Welcome to our world,” they said. Ten days later I shifted. Ater dinner at the Rao’s, I retired for the night. Overjoyed with my new ownership, I could not sleep. Around midnight I heard the dripping noise. The tap must be open, I thought. The basin was dry. Still I screwed the tap when the drop appeared - a single drop of red blood. Lazily meandering down the startling white basin it started growing into tentacles that spread towards me. I tried to move… to ward off the cold grip of the web. I shouted in desperation to wake up my friendly neighbours - but the echoes returned vacantly. The web grew… slowly…steadily…silently - pinning… my feet…hands… throat…eyes… while I struggled madly …the empty bare, silent walls the only witness to my death throes. The cold numbness of the red web drifted me to a misty sleep. I woke up to the sound of laughter. “Welcome to our world” they said – my interviewer, the agent, the Rao couple – why my entire office staff !
